Afghanistan: A Nation on the Brink of Famine Amid Mass Returns and Natural Disaster
Afghanistan is trapped in a devastating humanitarian crisis, fueled by an economic collapse, persistent drought, and recent earthquakes in the eastern provinces. Compounding the emergency, **over 1.9 million Afghan refugees** have been rapidly sent home from neighboring countries this year, overwhelming already depleted resources. **22.5 million Afghans** now rely on humanitarian aid to survive.
Crisis Layers: Hunger, Displacement, and Health Barriers
The World Food Programme reports that **15 million Afghans** face severe hunger, a number driven by chronic job loss and consecutive climate shocks. This hunger crisis is amplified by the abrupt mass return of refugees, who are arriving abruptly uprooted, exhausted, and often landing in areas already devastated by conflict and drought. They lack shelter, livelihood, and access to basic services.
Furthermore, the health crisis is dire, especially for women and girls. Under prevailing restrictions, the number of female doctors and midwives has sharply decreased. With Afghanistan already having the highest maternal mortality rate in Asia, pregnant women are delivering babies in unsafe conditions, struggling to access care due to both cost and a lack of female medical staff.
Immediate Needs on the Ground
- **Severe Food Insecurity:** Preventing widespread famine, especially in female-headed households facing the highest risk of debt and hunger.
- **Emergency Shelter:** Providing warmth and protection for both earthquake victims and returning refugee families ahead of winter.
- **Maternal Health:** Funding mobile female health workers and essential supplies to reduce the critical maternal and infant mortality rates.
- **WASH:** Distributing clean water and hygiene kits to prevent disease outbreaks in overcrowded displacement sites.
