Cyclone Remal: Massive Flooding Wipes Out Coastal Homes in Bangladesh
The coastal regions of **Bangladesh** have been ravaged by **Cyclone Remal**, one of the most severe storms in recent years. Massive storm surges breached embankments, flooding hundreds of villages and displacing over **3.5 million people**. Families have lost their homes, crops, and fresh water sources, leaving them entirely dependent on emergency relief. We urgently need support to prevent a secondary disaster from waterborne diseases.
Destruction and Displacement on the Coast
The storm's path of destruction has left low-lying areas under deep floodwaters, rendering access nearly impossible. The immediate devastation includes:
- **Housing Collapse:** Tens of thousands of homes, mostly made of bamboo and mud, were destroyed.
- **Agricultural Loss:** Vast areas of farmland and fisheries, the backbone of coastal livelihoods, were submerged in saltwater.
- **Infrastructure Damage:** Embankments and critical roads required for aid delivery have been washed away or severely damaged.
The displaced populations are crowding into temporary shelters and public buildings with extremely limited access to hygiene facilities or food. The prolonged exposure to contaminated floodwaters is creating an urgent health crisis, with cases of diarrhea and cholera rising rapidly, especially among infants and children.
Immediate Needs on the Ground
- **Emergency Shelter:** Distributing dry tarpaulins and basic materials to protect families from continuing rains.
- **Clean Water:** Providing water purification tablets and emergency water containers to prevent disease.
- **Food Security:** Delivering essential dry food rations, as access to local markets has been cut off.
- **Medical Support:** Stocking local health camps with critical oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and basic medicines.
